چکیده

The aim of this paper is to compare first order predicate logic, fuzzy logic and non-monotonic logic as knowledge representation methods. First, we define five properties of knowledge; conceptualization, transfer, modification, integration and decomposition. We also evaluate first order predicate logic, fuzzy logic and non-monotonic logic for the above properties, in the view of accuracy, complexity, and completeness. We then prove that the complexities of the three methods are NP-complete. We use this information to design a heuristic algorithm tested on probabilistic input to evaluate accuracy and completeness. With the results, we compare weaknesses and strengths of each method. q 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Optimal intelligent control for glucose regulation

This paper introduces a novel control methodology based on fuzzy controller for a glucose-insulin regulatory system of type I diabetes patient. First, in order to incorporate knowledge about patient treatment, a fuzzy logic controller is employed for regulating the gains of the basis Proportional-Integral (PI) as a self-tuning controller. Then, to overcome the key drawback of fuzzy logic contro...

Logic and Feature Structures

Feature structures play an important role in linguistic knowledge representation in computational linguistics. Given the proliferation of different feature structure formalisms it is useful to have a "common language" to express them in. This paper shows how a variety of feature structures and constraints on them can be expressed in predicate logic (except for the use of circumscription for non...

Literal Projection and Circumscription

We develop a formal framework intended as a preliminary step for a single knowledge representation system that provides different representation techniques in a unified way. In particular we consider first-order logic extended by techniques for second-order quantifier elimination and non-monotonic reasoning. Background of the work is literal projection, a generalization of second-order quantifi...

A New Equational Foundation for the Fluent Calculus

A new equational foundation is presented for the Fluent Calculus, an established predicate calculus formalism for reasoning about actions. We discuss limitations of the existing axiomatizations of both equality of states and what it means for a fluent to hold in a state. Our new and conceptually even simpler theory is shown to overcome the restrictions of the existing approach. We prove that th...

Predicate Introduction for Logics with Fixpoint Semantics. Part II: Autoepistemic Logic

We study the transformation of “predicate introduction” in non-monotonic logics. By this, we mean the act of replacing a complex formula by a newly defined predicate. From a knowledge representation perspective, such transformations can be used to eliminate redundancy or to simplify a theory. From a more practical point of view, they can also be used to transform a theory into a normal form imp...
